Cult Favourite, TokyoTaco, Opens Beachfront at Mooloolaba this June

  • Written by The Times

FREE Tokyo Tacos to Celebrate!

Cult favourite Japanese-Mexican restaurant TokyoTaco is opening a beachfront venue at the Mooloolaba Esplanade on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast this June.

The doors of the new venue will open on 18 June and to celebrate, TokyoTaco will be giving away 500 FREE tacos to those who order via the TokyoTaco app during the weekend of 28-29 June 2025.

After making massive waves in Sydney since its launching at Newtown in 2022, TokyoTaco is now blending its signature flavour-first approach with the laidback rhythm of the Sunshine Coast in an 80-seat venue just metres from the ocean.

The perfect location for where sashimi meets salsa, tequila meets tempura, nigiri meets nachos, crispy meets crunchy and every dish is a fusion of flavour, TokyoTaco Mooloolaba offers an unapologetically bold and inventive menu that includes a variety of low-gluten, vegetarian, protein-loving and plant-based offerings to-boot.

Co-founder, Jordan Hajek, says the success of TokyoTaco lies in the brand’s ability to fuse creativity with craveability by offering a fast and fresh dining experience.

“We’ve always believed in making food fun, fresh and full of flavour. Mooloolaba gives us the perfect backdrop to bring that philosophy to life.

“Our Mooloolaba venue is vibrant, outdoors, and it’s where people love to eat well. This space is everything we imagined a beachside TokyoTaco could be,” says Jordan Hajek.

Designed to feel as vibrant as the TokyoTaco menu – which features signature dishes like the Miso Baked Salmon Taco layered with Japanese mayo and caramelised chilli sauce, slow braised beef nachoSu topped with pico de gallo, and the cult-favourite TacoFries seasoned with TT’s iconic salt – the new Mooloolaba space brings together creative craftsmanship and beachside ease.

Guests are welcomed by a colourful mosaic doorway leading to a large communal table finished in the brand’s signature orange.

The interiors strike a playful balance between Japanese minimalism and Mexican warmth, featuring handset terracotta tiles imported from Mexico, handmade Japanese tiles in earthy tones of orange, grey and black from Nagoja, and a hand-painted mural by artist Charlie Nivison.

A 2.5-metre outward-opening pop window at the front of the venue adds a nod to the brand’s street food roots, doubling as a breezy service hatch for passers-by.

The new Mooloolaba location offers both internal and external seating, window perches, and alfresco tables, making it the ideal setting for a casual taco drop-in or a long lunch by the sea.

The venue also includes a full-service bar and coffee operations, further cementing it as a versatile all-day spot for locals and tourists alike.

Ordering has been designed with flexibility and beachgoers in mind. Guests can order at the bar, via self-serve kiosks, takeaway, or through the TokyoTaco app, which also unlocks exclusive offers and brand-wide promotions.

Located at 1/121 Mooloolaba Esplanade, Mooloolaba QLD 4557, TokyoTaco Mooloolaba will open daily from 11am. It will close at 9.00pm from Sundays-Wednesdays, at 10.00pm on Thursday evenings and at midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.
