Demand Grows for Slower, Nature-Based Escapes

Nature-based escapes

Australians are increasingly trading the pressures of everyday life for slower, more restorative travel experiences, with growing numbers seeking opportunities to disconnect from technology, spend time in nature and simply slow down.

Wotif's 2026 travel trends research found half of Australian travellers plan to choose slow, stress-free escapes in smaller towns this year, driven by a desire for fewer crowds, greater relaxation and the chance to recharge. Tourism & Transport Forum research found almost two-thirds of Australian travellers are considering a digital detox while travelling.

The shift is also occurring as many Australians look closer to home for their next escape, drawn to experiences that offer the feeling of getting away without the cost, planning and travel time associated with a major holiday.

One NSW South Coast retreat reflecting that trend is adults-only Cicada Luxury Camping, where a new guest-exclusive walking trail now leads through remnant subtropical rainforest to a secluded seasonal swimming hole overlooking the spectacular Jamberoo Valley.

The naturally rain-fed swimming hole sits at the top of a waterfall, rewarding guests with sweeping views across the valley after a short walk through the property's rainforest. It is the latest addition to the retreat, which has continued to expand since husband-and-wife founders Nick and Jen Currie opened Cicada in 2022.

Just 90 minutes from Sydney, the property now offers six accommodation sites, including luxury geodesic domes overlooking the surrounding rainforest and rolling countryside. Guests can soak in private outdoor baths, gather around fire pits, book in-tent spa and massage treatments, and enjoy the peace and privacy of the rural setting. The retreat operates on solar power and rainwater systems throughout.

Nick Currie, Co-founder and Director of Cicada Luxury Camping, said the retreat's recent additions – including the new rainforest walk, seasonal swimming hole, luxury domes and wellness experiences – reflect what many travellers are now seeking from a short break: access to nature, quiet surroundings and the opportunity to genuinely slow down.

"People come here exhausted and leave restored. The views, the fire, the fresh air – it all plays a part. You follow the trail through the rainforest, the swimming hole appears, and then the valley opens up in front of you. It's a moment that stays with you," he said.

Located minutes from the beaches of Kiama and Gerringong, Cicada Luxury Camping is about 90 minutes from Sydney, making it an easy regional escape for travellers looking to spend time in nature without travelling far from home.

Cicada is currently offering a 10% discount on selected mid-week stays through its Sneaky Mid-Weeky Winter promotion – a timely reminder that the best escapes don’t always have to wait for the weekend. Visit: cicadaluxurycamping.com.au
