Stone & Wood Byron Bay, the home of independent Australian beer

  • Written by: The Times

Travellers looking for experiences that support Australian business will find their place at Stone & Wood Brewery & Tasting Room in Byron Bay this summer, where the team behind this family-owned conscious business are gearing up to pour thousands of litres of their locally brewed beers.

Opened in December 2018, Stone & Wood’s Tasting Room in Byron’s Arts & Industrial Estate is a spacious 1,160-metre-square steel-and-timber complex that combines a working brewery alongside a spacious bar and bee-rgarden, complete with 31 brewing tanks and a canteen run by their friends at 100 Mile Table. The Tasting Room crew have served over 89,000 paddles of beer in two years.

Born and raised in Byron Bay, Stone & Wood is proudly independent, meaning it operates as a family- and Australian-owned business that can pursue its own vision and contribute to the local economy, jobs and communities.

Here, visitors can book a tour of the brewery or simply kick back in the award-winning designed Tasting Room and beer garden whilst enjoying a range of beers – from the crisp Green Coast Lager to the stone fruit flavours of Cloud Catcher pale ale – or sample their way through the rotating series of one-off Pilot Batch beers and limited releases from its weird and wonderful Counter Culture series.

Focussed on beer education, Stone & Wood runs guided brewery tours and tastings (60-90 minutes) to give visitors a behind-the-scenes look at Stone & Wood’s approach to brewing and conscious business.

Inspired by the idea of the ‘village brewery’, every month the Stone & Wood Tasting Room fundraises for a local grassroots charity chosen by the team, donating $1 per litre of beer sold over the bar via its not-for-profit, the inGrained Foundation. In September, the Tasting Room raised $10,000 for beach clean-up group Clean Coast Collective, and in October raised $8,460 for Bruns Brekkie, a not-for-profit serving breakfast for locals in need.
