Paddle into magic with Showtime Kayaking: Bioluminescence returns to Lake Macquarie

  • Written by The Times

As the cooler months set in, Lake Macquarie is once again playing host to nature’s light magic, transforming into a glowing spectacle as bioluminescent waters light up the night from May to June.

Located just two hours away from Sydney - this amazing natural phenomenon caused by microscopic plankton emitting light when disturbed, offers a mesmerizing experience for locals and visitors alike.

Running night tours throughout May and June, Showtime Kayaking offers the rare chance to paddle through glowing waters as microscopic organisms react to movement, creating a breathtaking trail of light beneath your boat.

Showtime Kayaking is Australia’s only guided night tours in 100% clear, LED-lit kayaks, giving guests a front-row seat to nature’s nightlife and the beautiful marine life below at Lake Macquarie as they glide round with an experienced Showtime guide.

Tips for Viewing Bioluminescence :

• Best view: Bioluminescence can be seen from the walking paths alongside the lake but for the most spectacular and immersive experience, try a guided Showtime Kayaking tour in one of its clear LED-lit kayaks and watch the fish glow and shimmer beneath you

• Best Time: Late evenings between May and June on moonless nights enhance visibility.

• Optimal Conditions: Look for calm waters after recent rainfall.

Where to Go: Areas like Warners Bay and other sheltered spots around Lake Macquarie are prime locations. Showtime Kayaking knows all the best places to see Bioluminescence so leave it in the trusted hands of their experienced tour guides!

So whether you're a first-time paddler or a seasoned water adventurer, Showtime Kayaking is the perfect way to add some splash to your plans. Children from 7 years old are welcome to kayak with an adult and can kayak solo from 14 years old.

With limited spaces available per night, advance bookings are essential. Kayaks and all equipment will be provided on the tour.

Follow the glow, and discover why bioluminescence at Lake Macquarie is fast becoming one of NSW’s most Instagrammable, immersive, and unforgettable natural wonders.
