Sydney apartment building residents urged to get behind food scrap trial

  • Written by NewsCo

The peak body representing apartment, unit, townhouse and other strata title properties in New South Wales says the trial should be expanded throughout the State if it meets its objectives in Sydney.

And it hopes the multi-million dollar problem of fat bergs will reduce if apartment residents find a better way to dispose of food scraps.

Strata Community Association (NSW) President, Chris Duggan, said today he supported a call by Sydney City Council for more apartment buildings to join the trial.

“We like what Sydney is doing here. They are taking a lead in minimising waste and turning it into green energy which is part of our push for sustainability in the strata sector,” Mr Duggan said.

“We need to look at every aspect of strata from building design to energy efficiency and sustainability and this trail is heading in the right direction.”

Mr Duggan said the incorrect disposal of food scraps, grease, wipes and other products used in food preparation played a huge role in the fat berg problem in Sydney and other major cities.

Fat bergs form in underground drainage, sewer and apartment service pipes when concentrated fat from food scraps binds together and hardens, blocking and in some instances, cracking pipes. It is a multi-million dollar repair problem in Sydney.

“I hope that Sydney apartment buildings get behind the food scrap trial and that if it proves successful, it will be expanded into other local authority areas as soon as possible.”
