Is a Ute Canopy Worth the Investment?

Yes, a ute canopy is a no-brainer if you work, tour or camp in your ute. A canopy adds security, weather protection and storage, making packing more manageable, especially if you use accessories, such as
canopy jack legs, to remove the canopy when needed. In the harsh landscape, a good quality ute canopy could turn a simple tray into a fully functional setup.

Why a Ute Canopy Is a Worthy Investment

A ute canopy isn’t just eye candy, especially with the appropriate vehicle modification. It’s about practicality and security if you depend on your ute.

Protection from the Weather

  • Shelter tools and equipment from rain, dust, and other elements.
  • Suitable for the unpredictable local weather
  • Keeps camping equipment dry through long journeys

Better Security

  • Lockable doors prevent theft of expensive tools
  • Less attractive for theft than an open tray

Boost Storage and Organisation

  • Allows for quick and efficient installation of drawer units, shelving, and other storage components.
  • Prevent clutter and ensure easier accessibility and organisation of tools
  • Keep small items and tools from sliding around and getting lost

More Versatile

  • In addition to work, you can use your ute for camping and touring when fitted with a canopy.
  • Increase usability with the addition of roof and ladder racks
  • Can be used with accessories such as fridges, dual battery systems, etc.

Fixed vs Removable Ute Canopies

The initial consideration when purchasing a ute canopy is whether to select a fixed or removable one. Your choice heavily depends on usage and needs.

  • Permanently fixed to the tray and with central locking, it scores high on safety, security, and weatherproofing. However, it loses on convenience and versatility. You can't easily switch back to an open tray. The added weight is something to consider as well.
  • Removable or jack off ute canopies are more flexible, since you can just remove the cover if you want an open tray. You can easily switch from a work ute to a leisure ute. This flexibility comes at the expense of strength and security. Removal and refitting require time and effort. Once removed, you'll need an appropriate storage for the canopy.

How Do You Make the Right Choice?

There are several factors you need to consider, but focus on materials and features. Some of the features you should consider are weight, durability, security, costs, weatherproofing, customisation, and construction quality. Different materials rank differently for each of these features.

  • Aluminium: Highly durable, lightweight, comes with rubber seals for excellent weatherproofing, highly secure with tail locks, and offers high customisation at mid-range costs. Aluminium ute canopies are built with lightweight, modular and high-quality designs.
  • Fibreglass: Moderately durable, lightweight and secure, but offers excellent weatherproofing. Similar to aluminium, fibreglass canopies have mid-range costs but moderate customisation. When it comes to construction quality, they're made durable and compatible with most components.
  • Steel: More durable than aluminium and heavier, which is something to think about when it comes to the gross weight capacity of your ute. It has excellent weatherproofing, security, and customisation options. It's not a surprise that steel canopies tend to be expensive. In terms of construction quality, you can expect maximum strength and highly specific applications.
  • Canvas: Given the material used, it's lighter and more inexpensive than aluminium but sacrifices durability, weatherproofing, and security. Customisation options are also limited, which makes it functional for specific uses only.

With the right canopy combined with logbook servicing to avoid breakdowns, your ute will become a great vehicle for work and leisure. If you’re looking for reliable canopy legs, check out what Australian Performance Boxes offers.
