The best places for digital nomads

  • Written by: The Times

With remote working now the norm, people across Australia are being given some of the best locations for digital nomads to travel to.

The term ‘digital nomads’ refers to people who work completely remote while travelling and moving to different locations across the globe.

The car rental and airport transfer specialists at StressFreeCarRental.com have researched the best places to travel based on connectivity for those looking to take on the digital nomad lifestyle - and come up with a list of seven top locations to consider.

Influencers and bloggers seem to be the most obvious digital nomad jobs which spring to mind. But over the past few years designers, writers and authors are also just a few of the jobs that can be done fully remote.

However, digital nomads cannot just move anywhere.

It’s important to find locations that fit with the lifestyle and unfortunately not everywhere will.

Luckily for those eager to travel, there are plenty of places that do cater to the digital nomad lifestyle especially now as it’s becoming a popular way to live.

A spokesperson at StressFreeCarRental.com said: “The perfect location for digital nomads is somewhere that is cost effective, has good internet and working spaces, and is of course picturesque and full of culture for inspiration.

“Having good, consistent and reliable internet is an incredibly important factor, as a digital nomad you’ll rely on this for your living. There are loads of online forums filled with people living and working remotely abroad that share their experiences on living costs, internet access and workspace access.

“We’ve researched places across the world and these seem to be the places that fit the criteria so that people can make the right decisions which will allow them to live comfortably abroad.”

Seven top locations for digital nomads:

  1. Buenos Aires, Argentina

Fast paced with inspiration on every corner is what makes Buenos Aires a great location for digital nomads. There are also plenty of cafes around which are a great working space and luckily transport is relatively cheap here too!

  1. Canguu, Bali

Canguu in Bali is arguably one of the most popular locations for digital nomads. Pretty much all of the cafes and restaurants offer free Wi-Fi with your meal, meaning finding a work space is super easy and as a whole Bali is pretty budget-friendly.

  1. Marrakech, Morocco

The average price of coffee in Morocco is around 98p, making it a great spot for coffee lovers. The general cost of living and travelling is generally quite cheap which is exactly what digital nomads need.

Morocco is also rich in culture and history so it’s a perfect destination for writers who are looking for some inspiration.

  1. Porto, Portugal

Porto is deemed to be one of the cheapest cities in Western Europe and it’s a great alternative to Lisbon if you’re after a bit more of a quieter lifestyle away from the busy city.

Porto is also known for keeping it’s European charm over the years. It offers everything that Lisbon does, it’s just a bit quieter, making it a great alternative.

  1. Thailand

Thailand as a whole is believed to be the most popular location amongst digital nomads.

It’s crystal clear waters and beautiful scenery make it a peaceful location for digital nomads to get their work done and again, it’s cost of living is generally quite low.

  1. Vietnam

Vietnam is known for its low cost of living which is what attracts many digital nomads and tourists from all over the world and it also has great internet speeds and an immersive culture where you can try different foods, attend festivals and events and visit some more historical attractions such as the temples.

  1. Budapest, Hungary

Budapest used to be known for being relatively cheap, however that’s not necessarily the case anymore. However, it’s still great value for money!

It’s diverse, full of beautiful scenery and rich with culture and many other places offering these qualities tend to be a lot more expensive.
