Here is a great checklist for organising your wedding flowers

  • Written by The Times

For many, flowers are a big component of a wedding day, and if you are soon to be married and you are considering your flower arrangements, this post is for you. Working out the details for a wedding is a big job, that's why we've compiled this checklist to make organising your flowers that much easier. Here is our checklist for organising your wedding flowers to ensure everything is covered and your big day goes off without a hitch.

Work out your budget

Before you work out what flower types and arrangements you'd like, it is best if you determine your budget first. Going ahead and booking your flowers without considering your budget may see you short on other areas. If you don't have a set budget, then you can skip this step.

Breakdown of potential flower arrangements

Remember that your wedding day is exactly that – yours! So you are the one who decides how many arrangements you want and the types. Here are some of the potential flower arrangements you can have:

Bridal bouquet

The bridal bouquet is arguably at the top of the list when it comes to priority arrangements for a wedding. Unlike some of the other arrangements for a wedding, the bridal bouquet will be in the most photographs, so it needs to be right. Some things to consider when choosing your bouquet are the size, arrangement, flowers, greenery, and form.

And while the bouquet is a centerpiece, don’t forget that arriving in style is just as important. Pair your dream bouquet with Melbourne’s finest wedding cars to ensure every detail of your big day reflects elegance and sophistication.

Bridesmaid bouquets

Next on the list is the bridesmaid bouquets. To create cohesion, it's best if you choose arrangements that are complementary to the bridals bouquet rather than something completely different.

Flower girl flowers and page boy

If you are having flower girls and or a page boy, you'll need to decide if you want them to have a boutonniere, bouquets, some petals in a basket, a flower crown etc or, if you don't mind if they don't have flowers.

Throw away bouquet

If you don't want to use your bouquet for the flower toss, it's a good idea to get a smaller bouquet that you can use instead.

Groom's Boutonniere

A boutonniere for the groom is a good way to add a touch of your bouquet to the groom.

Groomsmen Boutonnieres

While entirely optional, the groomsmen boutonnieres need to be considered if you are including them. Again these should be complementary to the groom's boutonniere.

Additional Other Boutonnieres and or Corsages

Do you want the mothers and fathers of the bride and groom or grandparents to have a boutonniere or corsage? If yes, these will need to be factored in.

Ceremony Flowers

Entry flowers

Again, entry flowers are entirely optional. However, placing flowers on welcome signs or petals leading to the ceremony can add to the ambience of the day.

Alter arrangements

Your alter and ceremony space will be where you say I do and where many photos will be taken. Floral arbours, florals on the sides of the aisle and off to the side where you'll be standing, and petals scattered on the ground are some of the many options available to you. Tossing petals are also another consideration for when you walk back down the aisle as a married couple.

Floral arrangements for the signing table

After you get married, the next point of call is signing your marriage certificate. You can choose to have this table decorated or simply place a vase on the table for you to put your bouquet in while doing this.

Reception Flowers

Table arrangements

Whether you are having a cocktail style wedding or a seated plan, you'll need to consider if you want to have flowers on the tables. Centrepieces for seated tables are usually the go-to whereas cocktail style or bar tables usually feature a small arrangement so it doesn't take up too much space. Floral arrangements for the bridal table are typically more elaborate than the guest's tables.

Seating plan or entry displays

If you are having these, think of whether you'd like to decorate them with florals or greenery.

Food arrangements

If you are having a grazing station or all the food laid out, placing a flower or two in the display can tie it in with the rest of your florals and give it a touch of luxury.

Wedding Cake Flowers

If you want flowers for your wedding cake or dessert table, these will need to be budgeted in.

Other areas at the reception

If there are other areas where your guests will mingle during the reception, such as an outdoor area or deck, you'll need to think about if you will want flowers or greenery arrangements in these spaces.

If your budget is small or you don't want to spend a bucketload on flowers but still want to create a stunning display for your big day, opting for bulk greenery is a great way to do this. Greenery is considerably cheaper and can be equally as stunning.

We hope this post has given you the confidence to nail your wedding day flowers. While we've listed some of the many options available to you, at the end of the day, you may choose to add more flowers than we've listed or considerably less. It can help to have photos of the areas and then collaboratively work with your florist to come up with the perfect arrangements for your day.
