Hill Road flood mitigation powers ahead with contract award

The contract for the flood study and design of the Hill Road Upgrade has been awarded to Haskoning Australia Pty Ltd in a critical step towards improving flood resilience on this key route.

The work will be carried out for City of Parramatta Council’s Hill Road Master Plan.

The NSW Government has committed $50 million under the Western Sydney Resilience Program, while the Australian Government has committed $8.5 million.

Hill Road is the main vehicular access for the peninsula and can be closed by flooding, with few alternative routes available for 2200 vehicles that access Wentworth Point and the Carter Street Precinct during peak hour each day.

The funding from the NSW Government’s Western Sydney Resilience Program will allow Council to deliver a long-term project to manage water flows across the peninsula, reduce flood risk and minimise disruption to the community.

This will be supported by the Australian Government funding for work including improved lighting and intersection upgrades that address current safety concerns.

The project is expected to take around three years to complete and will include design and construction of a major drainage system to capture and divert large flows and reduce the depth of water on the road.

Council will keep the community informed as the project progresses. For more information, go to:

Federal Member for Reid, Sally Sitou MP said:

“It’s great to see this vital upgrade moving forward with the awarding of the contract for flood study and design.

“These upgrades will support growth in this area with Hill Road forming an important link to this fast growing part of Sydney, so it’s essential that flood risk in the area is addressed head-on.

“I’m thrilled the Australian and NSW governments have invested in improving safety and connectivity for Wentworth Point by backing flood resilience for this critical road.”

State Member for Parramatta Donna Davis MP said:

“Hill Road is a critical link for our community travelling to and from Wentworth Point, an area subject to the rising flows of the Parramatta River with heavy rainfall.

“Once complete, this project will ensure the road is more resilient to flooding and minimise the risk of potential road closures.

“Flood management plans can be complex, so it’s important to make sure we have all the information we need to deliver the best possible outcomes.”

City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Martin Zaiter said:

“We’re pleased that Hill Road is getting the investment it needs to deliver these critical improvements for Wentworth Point residents.

“The funding has allowed Council to progress the necessary studies and flood preparedness measures to mitigate potential flood risks and make this road safe for commuters - it’s what our community deserves.

“We thank the Australian and NSW Government for their support.”
