Pet-Friendly Dining Rooms: How to Create Your Own

If there’s one thing that makes our lives enjoyable, it's our four-legged friends. Pets these days are members of the family, and more than simply mere possessions or companions. Making your home pet-friendly is an excellent way to ensure your animals’ comfort and pleasure, but sometimes you have to sacrifice style for this. However, this shouldn’t be the norm. This helpful article will help you design a pet-friendly dining room without sacrificing style. So, if you want a dining room that pops and is also friendly for your cat or dog, continue reading to learn more.

Design Tips for Pet-Friendly Dining Rooms

This section of the article will focus on some general design tips for a pet-friendly dining room.

Consider investing in washable chair covers for your dining chairs. This way, if a pet does sit on the chair and sheds fur or somehow stains the cover, your good chairs won’t be ruined. You can easily remove the chair covers, wash them on a delicate cycle, and replace them, keeping things looking fresh and tidy.

You may also want to invest in some stain-resistant rugs. Even the most toilet-trained pets can be prone to sometimes relieving themselves inside, and for this, you’ll want a stain-resistant rug that can be easily cleaned and treated should there be an accident. A slip-proof underlay for the rug is also a good idea, so your pet doesn’t go skittering or spilling out of control should they get the zoomies.

A Note on Surfaces

For your dining room surfaces, you should opt for durable and easy-to-clean materials. For instance, you can choose a sealed timber floor that is sturdy and easy to clean and should be resistant to wear and tear from your pets. For carpets, opt for performance fabrics and stain-resistant carpets that will stand the test of time and be protected against high foot and paw traffic. Wipeable, stain-resistant paints are an ideal choice for the walls, as you can easily clean these should a mess occur.

Defined Pet Zones

When designing your furry pal-friendly dining space, you should consider having some defined pet zones where your fluffy family member can relax comfortably and feel safe and secure. Make sure that their beds are in the space and are clean and comfortable.

Usually, you might leave pet bowls for food and water in the laundry or kitchen. This can quickly get messy and dirty, and it is also unseemly for these rooms. Consider installing a food and water station in your dining room by creating an alcove or tucked-away nook where pets can eat and drink with minimal foot traffic. This gives them their own dining room, making them feel part of the family.

You can consider having a tap plumbed in and installing a sink as well so you can easily dispense water and wash the bowls out without having to take them to the laundry or kitchen sink. This relatively straightforward renovation idea is perfect for any dining room. Once again, consider whether it may be best to consult a professional (in this case, a plumber) to do these works for you rather than DIY-ing. Working with an expert can help ensure your new water facilities are set up correctly.

You might also consider having some hidden storage for bowls and toys so your dining room doesn’t feel messy or cluttered while accommodating your four-legged friends.

Safe Layout

You’ll want to ensure that the layout works for both humans and animals. Make sure that your furniture is stable, and consider having some tether points if your pets are particularly rambunctious and can’t stay still or safe. Consider spill control as well, and perhaps you’ll have a stash of cleaning supplies in a hidden cupboard or drawer for the odd spill or mess that your pets may make.

Hygiene and Odour Control

When designing a pet-friendly dining room, hygiene is incredibly important, as this is where the family enjoys their meals. Ensure you stay on top of the cleaning and tidying and keep the space fresh and inviting for family, pets, and guests. You may want to invest in some odour control resources, such as drops, aromatherapy, or wax melts, to keep the space feeling and smelling clean and fresh.

Training Cues

When considering a pet-friendly dining room, think about training cues. You want your pets to eat when you decide, not them. Reward them for eating at designated times with treats or positive reinforcement, to support regular mealtimes for the whole family.
