What Apple really revealed: the iPhone is becoming your personal AI computer

Apple devices to become our own personal computer

Apple’s latest product event delivered the hardware headline many people had been waiting for: the company has entered the folding-phone market.

But the foldable iPhone may not have been the most important thing Apple revealed.

Look beyond the new screens, processors, cameras, watches and AirPods and a much larger strategy becomes visible.

Apple appears to be turning the iPhone from a smartphone that runs applications into something closer to a personal AI computer — a device that increasingly understands its owner, processes information about that person and coordinates the other devices surrounding them.

The significance is not that Apple has invented artificial intelligence.

It hasn't.

The significance is that Apple possesses something most AI companies do not: an enormous installed base of personal computers that people already carry everywhere they go.

And those computers know a great deal about the lives being conducted around them.

The foldable iPhone gets the attention

Apple's first folding iPhone was inevitably the spectacle of the event.

It moves Apple into a market Samsung and several Chinese manufacturers entered years ago.

That makes Apple's arrival unusually late by smartphone-industry standards.

But Apple has followed this strategy before.

It was not first to the MP3 player, smartphone, tablet, smartwatch or wireless earbud. Its traditional preference has been to allow a technology to develop and then enter when it believes the product can be incorporated successfully into the Apple ecosystem.

The foldable iPhone therefore matters for reasons beyond novelty.

When closed, it remains a conventional pocketable communications device.

Open it and considerably more screen space becomes available for reading, working, viewing photographs, watching video and using applications simultaneously.

The distinction between phone and tablet begins to blur.

For years consumers wanting a larger Apple mobile workspace have generally needed an iPhone and an iPad.

A folding iPhone begins putting both concepts into the same pocket.

That is potentially a much more important change than simply giving an iPhone a hinge.

But watch the artificial intelligence

The more consequential development may be happening inside the device.

The technology industry has spent the past several years racing to develop increasingly powerful generative AI systems.

Much of that competition has centred on enormous cloud-based models.

Apple has a different strategic advantage.

It controls the hardware.

It controls the operating system.

It controls much of the software environment.

And, increasingly, it controls processors powerful enough to perform sophisticated AI functions locally.

That makes the iPhone an extraordinarily valuable piece of technological real estate.

A general AI service can answer questions about the world.

A genuinely personal AI system potentially understands the world around one particular person.

There is an enormous difference.

Your phone already contains the raw material

Consider what a modern smartphone may contain or have authorised access to.

There can be photographs, messages, contacts, emails, appointments, locations, documents, applications, music, browsing activity and years of accumulated personal preferences.

Add an Apple Watch and another stream of information becomes available — movement, exercise and other health and fitness measurements.

AirPods provide an immediate audio interface.

The camera sees.

The microphone hears when activated.

The Watch senses.

The iPhone processes.

Artificial intelligence potentially connects those previously separate capabilities.

That is why Apple's AI strategy should not be judged simply by asking whether Siri can provide a better answer to a trivia question.

The larger question is whether Siri can eventually understand enough context to become genuinely useful.

From commands to intentions

Traditional smartphone computing requires the user to understand the machine.

You decide what you want to accomplish.

You find the appropriate application.

You open it.

You navigate its interface.

You provide the information.

You execute the task.

AI potentially reverses part of that relationship.

The user explains the desired outcome and the computer determines how to achieve it.

Instead of opening several applications to organise something, a person might eventually simply ask.

The important technological transition is therefore from commands to intentions.

That could fundamentally change the importance of apps themselves.

Applications may remain essential, but users may interact with them increasingly through an intelligent intermediary rather than manually navigating every interface.

If Apple can make that work reliably, Siri ceases to be merely a voice assistant.

It becomes an operating layer between the person and the digital world.

Privacy becomes part of the product

There is an obvious problem with creating a computer that understands its owner.

To become useful, personal AI requires personal information.

That immediately raises the question: who gets to see it?

Apple's emphasis on performing as much processing as practical on the device is therefore more than a technical choice.

It is potentially a commercial differentiator.

There are broadly two possible models for personal artificial intelligence.

One sends enormous quantities of personal information to remote computers for processing.

The other attempts to perform as much processing as possible on hardware controlled by the individual, calling on larger external systems only when necessary.

Neither approach eliminates privacy questions.

But Apple's enormous investment in its own silicon means it has the ability to push significant amounts of computation towards the device itself.

That may eventually become one of the strongest reasons for buying premium hardware.

Processing power would no longer simply make applications open faster.

It would determine how much intelligence could remain physically in your possession.

AirPods become more interesting too

Viewed separately, AirPods are headphones.

Viewed as part of Apple's emerging AI architecture, they become something else.

They are a permanently available conversational interface.

A person does not necessarily need to remove an iPhone from a pocket to interact with an intelligent assistant.

They can speak.

The system can respond directly into their ears.

Capabilities such as live translation demonstrate where this could lead.

Imagine travelling through another country while your headphones increasingly mediate communication, directions, appointments and information around you.

The screen becomes less important.

The computer remains in your pocket.

The interface follows you.

Apple Watch supplies another piece

The Apple Watch occupies another unusual position in this system.

It is attached to the person.

That sounds obvious, but technologically it is enormously important.

A phone is carried.

A watch is worn.

Its sensors can continuously collect information that a conventional computer cannot.

Apple has steadily expanded the Watch's health and fitness capabilities, turning what began largely as a smartphone accessory into an increasingly sophisticated personal sensor platform.

AI makes accumulated sensor information more useful because computers become better at identifying patterns within it.

The Watch therefore supplies data.

The iPhone supplies computing power.

AirPods supply a conversational interface.

Apple Intelligence supplies an increasingly intelligent layer connecting them.

Seen that way, Apple's product categories begin looking less like separate businesses.

They look like components.

The camera has another job: proving reality

There is another development deserving particular attention as AI-generated imagery becomes indistinguishable from photography.

Digital cameras have traditionally answered one question:

What does this scene look like?

Increasingly they may need to answer another:

Did this scene actually exist?

Technology designed to establish the provenance of photographs could become extraordinarily important.

Artificial intelligence can now generate convincing photographs of people, places and events that never existed.

That creates problems for journalism, courts, insurers, police, businesses and ordinary individuals.

The response cannot simply be increasingly sophisticated fake-image detection.

Eventually authentication may need to begin when the photograph is created.

A trustworthy camera may therefore become not merely an image-capture device but a device capable of providing evidence about an image's origin and subsequent modification.

For news organisations, that development could prove more consequential than another increase in camera resolution.

The price tells another story

There is also no escaping the economics.

Apple continues pushing its most desirable products further into premium territory, while a folding iPhone establishes another category above the conventional flagship smartphone.

That is risky.

Consumers have limits.

But Apple is effectively arguing that the smartphone is becoming important enough to justify increasingly expensive hardware.

The argument becomes stronger if the device begins replacing functions previously requiring several devices.

A $2,000 phone is expensive.

A pocket computer capable of replacing portions of a phone, tablet, translator, camera, personal assistant and AI workstation is a different proposition.

Whether consumers accept that proposition will be one of the most interesting tests of Apple's strategy.

The ecosystem is becoming the product

This may ultimately be the lesson from Apple's event.

For years we have spoken about the "Apple ecosystem" primarily in terms of convenience.

Photographs appear on another device.

AirPods connect automatically.

Messages synchronise.

A Watch unlocks a computer.

That was integration.

Artificial intelligence potentially turns integration into something much more powerful.

The ecosystem can begin accumulating context.

The Watch senses you.

The iPhone understands your digital environment.

Siri interprets your request.

AirPods allow you to communicate with the system.

The camera records the world around you.

The larger screen gives you somewhere to work when required.

No single component is revolutionary by itself.

Their combination may be.

The next smartphone battle may not be about smartphones

That changes the competitive landscape.

For most of the smartphone era, manufacturers competed over familiar specifications: screen quality, camera performance, battery life, processor speed and industrial design.

Those things still matter.

But the next competition could be over something far more difficult to measure.

Which computer understands its owner best while requiring that owner to surrender the least?

Google has formidable AI capabilities.

Samsung has enormous hardware expertise and an established foldable business.

OpenAI and other AI developers have powerful models.

Apple's advantage is different.

It already occupies the pocket, wrist, ears and computers of hundreds of millions of customers.

Its challenge is connecting those devices intelligently without destroying the privacy and simplicity that made the ecosystem valuable in the first place.

That is a much harder engineering problem than building a folding screen.

The Times View

The folding iPhone was designed to attract attention.

Artificial intelligence may explain why it matters.

Apple appears to be building towards a world in which the iPhone is no longer merely the device through which we access digital services. It becomes the personal computer that understands what we are trying to accomplish and coordinates the technology around us to accomplish it.

That creates enormous opportunities — and equally large questions about privacy, dependence and how much of ourselves we should allow a computer to understand.

The smartphone revolution put a computer in almost everyone's pocket.

The AI revolution may give that computer something it has never really possessed before: context.

And context is the difference between a machine that waits to be told what to do and one that begins to understand why we are asking.
