Australian Institute of Management rebrands as Institute of Managers and Leaders

  • Written by Kristy Hodder

The evolution of the 76-year old membership organisation brings Chartered Manager accreditation to certify professional leadership excellence.

  • The Australian Institute of Management (Membership) has this week rebranded as the Institute of Managers and Leaders
  • The Institute is now offering and assessing Chartered Manager certification and designation, setting the industry standard for management competence
  • The Institute is working with Australia’s world class universities to accredit management and leadership focused undergraduate and post graduate courses for the first time.

The Australian Institute of Management Group has rebranded this week to the Institute of Managers and Leaders (IML).

The rebrand follows a strategic decision to re-establish the 76-year-old membership organisation as the peak professional body that sets the national standard for management and leadership excellence.

The newly named Institute of Managers and Leaders seeks to lift the standard of management and leadership across Australia and New Zealand by offering Chartered Manager – the global gold standard designation for managers and leaders. In addition, IML will partner with universities to offer undergraduates and postgraduates studying management and leadership based courses a clear pathway to future Chartered status.

The change of focus and name follows the divestment of AIM’s training and education business in 2015. Chief Executive of the Institute of Managers and Leaders, David Pich said:

“Businesses expect accountants and lawyers to meet a standard of professional excellence and competence, but management and leadership is too often ignored and left to chance. This is despite numerous studies over the past two decades that have consistently exposed the alarming impacts of bad management practice on organisations and on their staff. This needs to change. Leadership matters and the Institute of Managers and Leaders intends to put management and leadership competence front and centre in Australian workplaces”.

Through a long term strategic partnership with the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) in the United Kingdom, the Institute of Managers and Leaders has become the first assessing body for the highly-regarded and globally recognised Chartered Manager designation outside of the UK.

Chartered Manager (CMgr) offers managers and leaders a designation that demonstrates their practical leadership competence. In addition, Chartered Manager sees the introduction of a Code of Ethics for managers and a commitment to continuing professional development (CPD), as well as an annual audit of their skills.

“Chartered Manager is the global gold standard for management and leadership excellence,” said Pich. “It’s time to talk about leadership and that conversation needs to frame management and leadership as a profession that is taken as seriously as the other professions. Chartered Manager is the beginning of the professionalisation of management and leadership in Australia and New Zealand. Anyone who has been impacted by poor management will understand that this move is long overdue”.

In addition to Chartered Manager, the Institute of Managers and Leaders has launched the first accreditation pathway for local universities and business schools aimed at Australia’s future generations of managers and leaders.

University accreditation of management degrees is already in place at more than 100 universities around the world and now, for the first time, Australia’s 39 universities – as well as the 9 universities in New Zealand – will have the opportunity to accredit with IML, and set their students on the pathway to future Chartered Manager status.

The Institute is already in conversations with 11 local universities.

At the heart of the rebrand of AIM Membership to the Institute of Managers and Leaders is the desire to have a deep and long lasting impact on the development of the region’s managers and leaders.

Poor management impacts people well beyond the workplace. It’s time for this to change. IML will lead that charge,” said Pich.
