Seiko 5 Sports Celebrates 55 years With a Special Creation Honouring Bruce Lee

  • Written by The Times

First introduced in 1968, the Seiko 5 Sports collection has brought durable and reliable mechanical watches to watch lovers around the world. In commemoration of the 55th anniversary of the collection, Seiko introduces a limited-edition creation that pays tribute to Hong Kong-American film actor Bruce Lee, who wore 5 Sports during his lifetime. This commemorative watch honours his many achievements as a martial artist, actor, and cultural icon.
Born in San Francisco, Bruce Lee was a film actor, martial artist, director, and teacher whose career spanned continents. He became an international superstar with the smash hit The Big Boss (1971) but tragically passed away at the young age of 32 when he was filming Enter the Dragon (1973). A multifaceted creator and martial arts expert, Lee founded Jeet Kune Do, which translates to “Way of the Intercepting Fist.” His work continues to attract fans from all over the world.
The watch dial shows a picture of a dragon, which Lee drew in his lifetime. The bezel features characters that represent the spirit of Jeet Kune Do with a phrase that translates to “Using no way as way; having no limitation as limitation."
The black leather strap with silver stitching evokes the type of clothing worn in kung fu. Its inside features the same dragon design as shown on the dial. The watch also comes with an additional nylon strap in the design of the iconic yellow tracksuit Lee wore.
The watch is powered by Calibre 4R36 and offers 10 bar water resistance. The glass is a Hardlex crystal, and the stainless steel case with black hard coating enhances the watch’s durability. The case back features the Jeet Kune Do core symbol, which is based on the yinyang symbol and is marked with the "Limited Edition" letters and the serial number. The watch is enclosed in a specially designed presentation box with Lee’s signature. The watch will be available from October 2023 at the Seiko Boutiques and select retail stores worldwide as a limited edition of 15,000
