Brewing Brands and Origin Tea Join Forces with CafeSmart to Help fight Homelessness

  • Written by: The Times

CafeSmart campaign to raise money and awareness to fight homelessness and give a hot cuppa to those sleeping rough this winter.

CafeSmart is an annual campaign that draws on Australians’ relationship with local cafes to fight homelessness in their area. Now in its 14th year, more than 700 cafes are working with StreetSmart Australia to raise much-needed funds for those at risk by donating $1 per coffee sold on Friday August 16.

As a supplier to cafes around south-east Queensland, Brewing Brands is raising money through its Ordermentum system and will match every dollar donated by its customers during this year’s campaign from August 10-16.

Australian tea company Origin Tea, which is part of the Brewing Brands family, is also getting behind the campaign by encouraging tea drinkers to pay forward a hot cup of tea to someone experiencing homelessness. Donations can be made online here. Origin Tea has pledged to match all donations in tea, sending Ceylon’s finest single origin tea to community organisations around Brisbane, such as 3rd Space drop-in centre at Fortitude Valley, to help warm up winter for those in need.

All money raised during the week will be funnelled into local grassroots organisations to help fund essential responses to homelessness such as food relief, emergency support, and housing and accommodation programs.

“Homelessness is a big problem in south-east Queensland where the cost of housing has gone through the roof in recent years. On any given night across the state, there are thousands of people without a safe home, including families. We want to do whatever we can to make them more comfortable at this time and are working with our partners and customers to tackle homelessness one hot cuppa at a time,” Brewing Brands, and Origin Tea, CEO Chris Seaton said.

“With the number of people struggling to make ends meet and living below the poverty line remaining high, community support is more crucial than ever. We are thrilled to have Brewing Brands and Origin Tea join us for CafeSmart this year, helping us respond to homelessness. It’s a powerful example of how industry brands can unite to drive positive social change right in their own backyards,” says Liz Bayrak, Community Campaign and Events Coordinator at StreetSmart Australia.
