From Discovery to Prescription: How a New Medicine Reaches Australian Patients

When Australians collect a prescription from their local pharmacy, the medicine has often travelled a remarkable journey spanning more than a decade.

Before a new treatment reaches patients, it may have progressed through years of scientific research, laboratory testing, clinical trials, regulatory assessment and commercial negotiation. Only after passing each stage does it become available through Australia's healthcare system.

Once approved and listed, production begins at commercial scale.

Some medicines are manufactured in Australia, while many are imported from overseas production facilities operating under strict quality standards.

Dispensing to Patients
