Sigrid Thornton to receive Walk of Fame honour at Slant premiere

  • Written by The Times

Australian screen royalty, Sigrid Thornton will be inducted to the Australian Film Walk of Fame outside the historic Ritz Theatre in Randwick when she attends the Sydney Premiere of her latest feature film, Slant on Wednesday, July 26.

In its announcement today, Randwick Council said that Thornton’s star will be unveiled on the Walk of Fame as she arrives at the cinema, which is expected to be between 5.45pm and 6.15pm.

After the brief ceremony, Thornton will join the filmmakers of Slant to introduce the film’s first Sydney screening which will be followed by a Q&A session once the credits have rolled.

Slant is a darkly comic thriller featuring an ensemble cast with Thornton playing Vivianne Vertity, the crazed matriarch of a dysfunctional family. She will be joined at the event by director James Vinson, producer Monique Fisher and writer/actor Michael Nikou (Fisk).

Joining Thornton and Nikou in the cast are Ra Chapman (Wentworth), Ryan A. Murphy, Elle Mandalis (Head On), Pia Miranda (Looking For Alibrandi) and Kate Lister (Clickbait).

The Australian Film Walk of Fame is located outside the iconic Ritz Cinema in ‘The Spot’ at Randwick. The footpath promenade outside the heritage cinema holds a number of bronze plaques honouring legends of Aussie film, including Gary Sweet, Leah Purcell, Barry Otto, Claudia Karvan, Deborah Mailman, Michael Caton and many others.

Thornton has starred in many of the films now regarded as classics of Australian cinema. They include George Miller's box office hit The Man From Snowy River (Fox Classics), The Lighthorsemen (RKO), directed by Simon Wincer, Slate Wyn And Me (Hemdale) and The Man From Snowy River II (Disney - Touchstone). In 2015, she won the AACTA Award for Best Guest or Supporting Actress in a Television Drama for her role as Judy Garland in the 2015 miniseries, Peter Allen: Not The Boy Next Door.

Slant is the feature film directorial debut of James Vinson, who is known for his television credits, which include Wentworth and Glitch. In addition to Nikou, producers are Monique Fisher, Alexandros Ouzas and Tessa Mansfield-Hung.

Slant was completed with the assistance of the Queer Screen Film Fund.
