World’s Largest Outback Choir rocks the Mundi Mundi Plains

Mundi Mundi crowd on Friday

Thousands of Bashers came together in the world’s biggest outback choir - raising vital funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS).

What started as a nod to Tina Turner and her iconic Simply the Best chorus turned into something much bigger at the Mundi Mundi Bash this morning - a giant celebration of resilience, community and the sheer determination to get the show on the road.

With the sun blazing over the Mundi Mundi Plains, 2,800 of the 10,000 festival-goers currently on site joined forces for the brand-new Bash Choir - the World’s Biggest Outback Choir - in a spectacular ‘singing for saviours’ moment raising funds for the RFDS.

Thousands of voices rang out across the spectacular Outback landscape as Bashers belted out the Tina Turner classic, with the fundraising sing-off kicking off a new tradition for the festival and giving back to the organisation that has been saving lives across the Australian outback for generations.

The inaugural Bash Choir has already proved a major fundraising driver for the RFDS, with ticket and merchandise sales raising more than $125,000 this year - and the tally is still climbing.

And it wasn’t just the singing that bought the sparkle.

A sea of Tina Turner wigs, sequins, big hair and even bigger personalities filled the Mundi Mundi Plains as Bashers dressed for the occasion, transforming the iconic Outback festival site into a glittering tribute to one of music’s greatest performers.

For a festival that has overcome challenging weather conditions, the timing couldn’t have been better.

Festival Founder and Outback Music Festival Group Managing Director Greg Donovan said the morning was a fitting celebration of the determination that had seen the Bashers and event team overcome the odds:

“Our Bashers are probably Australia’s most resilient and determined festival goers. And our event team matches that energy.

“For all of us to get to the stage where we’re opening the gates to the people who have not yet been able to make it to site, and to already have 10,000 people camping out here, is nothing short of phenomenal considering we were dealing with record rain in a remote Outback location.

“The vibes out here are high, and we had a cracking first day of entertainment yesterday, and some awesome pop-up concerts from artists around Broken Hill and Silverton for people who didn’t make it into site.  With the sun beating down on us the Bash Choir was such an uplifting, celebratory way to open today.”

The Bash Choir is the latest addition to the Mundi Mundi Bash program, combining the festival’s trademark sense of fun with a serious fundraising mission.

Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Mundi Mundi Plains, the event brought together music lovers, families, grey nomads, festival fanatics and Outback adventurers for a very Australian kind of choir practice - complete with sequins, sunshine and thousands of voices singing for a cause.

For Greg Sam, Chief Executive for RFDS South Eastern Section, the funds raised will help support its vital work delivering lifesaving healthcare services to people living, working and travelling across remote and regional Australia.

“The inaugural Bash Choir has exceeded all expectations. It's been wonderful to see so many people come together, have some fun and support a cause that's close to their hearts. Despite the rain, the good vibes have continued to flow and the support for the Flying Doctor has been incredible. We're grateful to every person who joined the choir and helped raise funds for rural and remote healthcare.”

The choir was led by Robyn Loau and Miranda Carey from the Bash House Band, alongside choirmaster Brydon Stace from The Voice and Australian Idol.

The Bashers performed Tina’s Simply the Best in honour of Nutbush City Limits inspired the Nutbush Dance World Record of 6,779 participants set at last year’s Mundi Mundi Bash - and fiercely competed for by sister event the Birdsville Big Red Bash.

And the fun is far from over. Tonight, Bashers will be treated to powerhouse performances from some of Australia’s most loved rock, blues and pop artists – including - Wes Carr, Hot Potato Band, Wendy Matthews, Tim Finn, Boy & Bear, Legacy: 60 years of Fleetwood Mac, and Chocolate Starfish - closing day two of an unforgettable desert experience.
