David Littleproud - Labor needs to stop the US sticking the boot into kangaroos

One of Australia’s favourite animals, the kangaroo, is under attack, with the United States pushing to ban kangaroo imports.

A new Bill in Democrats-led Oregon wants to stop the sale of kangaroo products being used by Nike and other shoe companies. A similar Bill has been introduced in Connecticut.

It would make it a crime to buy, receive, sell or commercially exchange any product containing kangaroo.

Kangaroo leather can be used in small portions in shoe parts, including soccer cleats.

Leader of The Nationals David Littleproud said the Bill was concerning and Labor needed to stop the US from sticking the boot into the kangaroo industry.

He’s calling on Agriculture Minister Murray Watt and Australia’s new Ambassador to the US Kevin Rudd to back our Australian kangaroo industry.

“Mr Rudd needs to use his new position as US Ambassador to fight for our kangaroo industry and protect their welfare,” Mr Littleproud said.

The former Coalition Government had Ambassador Sinodinos make official representation and invitations to US politicians to visit the industry in Australia.

“Research shows banning the import of kangaroos to the US would result in more uncontrolled killing.

“We know kangaroos can breed easily and are not a threatened species.”

The kangaroo industry is one of the world’s best wild harvest operations.

Kangaroo meat product is also sustainably sourced in accordance with quotas, which are scientifically set and regularly monitored.

“Minister Watt needs to step up and ensure our export trade and agriculture industry remains strong.

“We want our kangaroo industry to continue to thrive and that means ensuring its international trade success.”
