The benefits of multilingual data management (2023)

Organizations and businesses that produce a lot of data in different languages need to manage their data effectively for record purposes. Multilingual Data Management refers to the process of creating and storing data in different languages.

Below, we discuss the different approaches for designing data models solely for localization purposes. If you manage content in different languages, make sure you read this article until the very end to learn a thing or two about how to manage your data.

Forms of data management approaches

Column approach

The first approach we want to look at is the column approach. This one is the most common and simplest form of managing data. It is done by creating an extra column for each text so two texts are not in the same column. So one column is the translated text and the other contains the translation.

Advantages

Simple: Texts stored in columns are easy to implement. You don't need any special skills or stringent arrangements to store text. Moreover, a quick glance at the columns will give the viewer a clear idea of what the text in each column means.

No duplicate: With this approach, you don't have to deal with the duplicated text as there is one row for each language or text.

Disadvantages

It takes great effort: The column approach takes a lot of effort to complete and maintain. The more languages you work with the more tasking the process as you will have to make so many entries.

Storage space: You need a lot of storage space for your translations. More spaces and fields are required for each text.

New additions may be a problem: After completing a schema, adding a new language can be a problem.

High maintenance cost: It is quite expensive to maintain

Multirow approach

The second approach to multilingual data management is the multirow approach. This one is similar to the column approach but the emphasis is on the rows, not the columns. Storing data in this form requires row duplication.

Advantages

Easy to implement: This approach is relatively easy to implement and no joining of words is required

Disadvantages

It has similar disadvantages like the column approach in addition to the need to duplicate many texts.

Single translation approach

A single translation approach will require a table for data storage. All texts that need to be translated into one language will be stored in a table. This method is best for websites that use more than two languages. The single translation approach method is popular because it makes it easier for the user to add a new language.

Advantages

Clean: It allows for clean and uniform text arrangement

New text: Adding new text and languages is much easier.

Single source: You get all your texts and translation in a single table

Disadvantages

Complex: Many people find it complex because it requires multiple joining of rows and columns.

High maintenance: It requires high maintenance such as regular insertion, removal and updating of text.

Missing table: If a single table is missing it creates an entire translation problem.

Additional translation table

An additional translation stores data in an additional table. This approach is ideal for those working with sensitive data. To avoid mistakes and confusion, an additional table is created for an insensitive text that is not so important. This makes it easy for the user to differentiate between the translated text and the original text.

Advantages

Concise: It is clean and easy to interpret

Great for new languages: You can add as many languages as you want without stress.

Disadvantage

Too many tables: You will need to create more tables than required for other approaches

All these approaches work for two, three, or more languages. Deciding on any of these approaches should be a matter of choice. You can go for anyone you feel most comfortable with as long as it helps with your translation.

Benefits of multilingual data management

If you translate text into multiple languages, adopting a proactive storage strategy for managing your data has several benefits. We review some of these benefits below.

Identify errors easily: When dealing with a large body of translated text, errors are bound to occur but identifying the error is not so easy. With a refined and comprehensive data management strategy you will be able to identify errors quickly by skimming through the tables on your sheet to identify the wrong or misused words.

Easy to update: You can easily update your text library by either adding new texts or languages. All you need to do is to simply update and create new rows and columns for the language or text.

Creation value: If you have a database of the translated text, executing translation work becomes much easier; you can produce more work in less time by just drawing information from your tables. This leads to improved productivity. Moreover, the quality of your translations will improve significantly since your data center will be a treasure trove of data. The more text you have the better your options.

Multilingual Data Management is becoming increasingly important in today's globalized world, where businesses and organizations need to communicate effectively with customers, clients, and partners who speak different languages.

Professional translation firms can play a significant role in helping organizations effectively manage their multilingual data. These firms provide high-quality translation services that ensure the accuracy and consistency of information in multiple languages. They can also help organizations stay compliant with language-specific regulations and requirements.
