Tips for Cleaning Windows

  • Written by The Times

Many people think that cleaning windows isn’t all that important in maintaining their home. Clean windows let in more light and make your home brighter. Clean windows improve your home’s curb appeal and make it more attractive. Clean windows make it easier to spot problems that need more serious attention. Clean windows save you money in the long run. Dirty windows lead to expensive replacement costs.

Cleaning windows can be a chore as it’s not always easy to do. If you have hard-to-reach windows that are difficult to clean yourself, investigate window cleaning in Sydney to find a competent professional.

Interior Windows

Cleaning inside windows is easier than cleaning exterior windows. You can make your own DIY cleaner with 1 cup water, 1 cup white vinegar and a spray bottle.

Spray your windows down with the DIY solution and use a microfibre cloth to swipe an S pattern, from left to right and from top to bottom. This should leave your windows streak-free and shining.

Use a glass microfibre cleaning cloth. These cloths feature a flat weave that is ideal for cleaning delicate surfaces like glass and mirrors. A lot of microfibre cloths are made with a terry weave which can scratch the surface. For best results, you want to use a non-textured glass cleaning cloth.

For interior window sills, frames and casings use the same DIY spray. Most modern window materials have no trouble dealing with vinegar, soap and water.

If you notice mould on indoor windows make sure to treat it with mould and mildew cleaner.

Pop out any screens and give them a thorough dusting. You can also give them a mild scrubbing with a soft brush and your DIY solution.

Exterior Windows

Before you tackle exterior windows, check the weather conditions. You want a calm cloudy day to avoid accidents.

You are going to need your DIY cleaning solution, a bucket, a squeegee and a scrubber. Add a few drops of dish soap to your cleaning solution. This helps remove grease and grime. You will also need a ladder or extension pole to reach windows higher off the ground.

Fill your bucket with water and cleaning solution. Dip your sponge or brush into the cleaning solution and let it get saturated. You want it sopping wet. Start scrubbing your windows. Start from the top and work your way down.

Now take your squeegee and remove the water and dirt from your windows. They should come away sparkling clean.

If you have second or even third-story windows you definitely need a sturdy ladder and extending pole. If you have particularly high windows or a big cleaning job, then it’s time to bring in the professionals.

Window and Sliding Door Tracks

Use a vacuum with a brush attachment to clean up as much debris and dust in the sliding track as you can. Then use a dish brush and give the track a good scrubbing and rinse.

Properly cleaning and caring for your windows ensures they will last longer and make your home brighter and more enjoyable.
