Memorial awash in purple to honour Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

On Sunday night, 6 February, the Australian War Memorial was illuminated in purple to honour the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
This year, Her Majesty The Queen becomes the first British monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, 70 years of service, having acceded to the throne on 6 February 1952.

In February 1954 Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II became the first reigning British monarch to visit Australia. During the eight-week Royal Tour of Australia, the Queen and Prince Philip visited the Australian War Memorial.

Queen Elizabeth II has visited Australia on 15 occasions since then, returning to the Memorial many times.

In acknowledgment of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, the Memorial has also brought together a selection of images from Her Majesty’s many visits on the Memorial’s website: https://www.awm.gov.au/platinumjubilee
