A quality cut to bills for Beaufort butcher

Victorians are increasingly turning to Easy Electric SEC to better understand their home energy options and make more informed choices about electrification.
Since launching in May, the free platform, has helped more than 150,000 Victorians explore the costs, savings and practical considerations of switching from gas to electric appliances.
By providing personalised information and connecting users with SEC-endorsed local installers, Easy Electric SEC is helping households navigate the transition with greater confidence and clarity.
For many consumers, Easy Electric SEC is the first step in gathering trusted information relevant to household energy use. This platform is also an informative resource for those exploring potential additional upgrades in and around their home, including estimated upfront costs and savings.
In four months, SEC has seen strong engagement with the Easy Electric tool across both regional and metro Victoria.
Rohan Quinton, who is based in Beaufort, Victoria, is no stranger to the cold having grown up in Ballarat and now spending his days moving in and out of a refrigerated cool room at work as a butcher.
Despite his tolerance for the cold, Mr Quinton was looking for a better option than spending more than $500 a fortnight on bottled gas.
“At its peak, heating the home with bottled gas cost up to $550 a fortnight,” he said.
"It's a lot of money, and we weren't extravagant with the amount we were using."
After calculating his potential savings through Easy Electric SEC, Mr Quinton then used the platform to find a local SEC-endorsed installer.
He was able to confidently choose an electric ducted heating and cooling system to replace his existing gas central heating while making use of much of the home's existing setup, which includes rooftop solar, installed almost two years ago.
Mr Quinton said the process was simple and provided the clarity and reassurance he had been seeking, with the proof coming in the form of his most recent electricity bill.
“I’ve gone from paying around $1,000 a month for gas to less than $100 with this new electric system,” he said.
“To say this is a considerable savings difference is an understatement”. The Beaufort resident is already anticipating further savings during the warmer months.
“We have rooftop solar, so even if we have the cooling (system) running until 8pm at night with daylight saving time, it means the solar will still be doing its job at that time.”
SEC Executive General Manager Consumer Sumone Chakravarti recognises some households favour ease of use and efficiency, while for other consumers the primary focus is on cost.
“Every household's circumstances are different, which is why access to clear and reliable information is so important," Sumone said.
"Easy Electric SEC helps Victorians understand the options available to them so they can make informed choices about what works best for their home, budget and energy needs.
"Whether people are looking to reduce their running costs, improve comfort, or plan future upgrades, the platform gives them the confidence to take the next step when they're ready."
Easy Electric SEC helps Victorian households understand their energy use, explore electric appliance upgrades and see estimated costs, savings, rebates and discounts.
When you're ready to take the next step, you can also connect with SEC-endorsed installers and request obligation-free quotes.
